speed vest

speedvest_lead-1.jpg
You know those signs at like airports and road construction sites that read “Your Speed” and give electronic readings of how fast cars are going in an effort to shame people into slowing down? Yeah, they mostly serve to make people speed up in order to jump the readings (dumb sign makers: don’t they know America has no shame. Well now a design and engineering team have constructed a vest that allows bikers to show off how fast they’re going.

Designer Brady Clark and engineer Mykle Hansen put together the speed vest using a wheel speed sensor, a wearable numeric display, and an open-source mini-computer. Seems like a cool idea to us—you and your friends could get a few and have a race, or, better yet, when we’re cruising by you in our ride, we’ll gun the motor and figure out the speed differential it takes to knock a cyclist over. Check after the jump for a short clip of the vest in action.

Via MAKE:

“Tired of seeing the abandoned eyesore on a daily basis, artist Jennifer Marsh decided to cover this old gas station in 5,000 square feet of fabric.

With the help of professional and amateur artists from 15 countries and more than 2,500 grade-school students in 29 states, Marsh covered the 50-year-old former Citgo station — pumps, light stands, signs and all — with more than 3,000 fiber panels that are crocheted, knitted, quilted or stitched together.”

AP: “Scientists closer to developing invisibility cloak “

THIS IS DOPE!

Scientists say they are a step closer to developing materials that could render people and objects invisible.

Researchers have demonstrated for the first time they were able to cloak three-dimensional objects using artificially engineered materials that redirect light around the objects. Previously, they only have been able to cloak very thin two-dimensional objects.

The findings, by scientists at the University of California, Berkeley, led by Xiang Zhang, are to be released later this week in the journals Nature and Science.

The new work moves scientists a step closer to hiding people and objects from visible light, which could have broad applications, including military ones.

People can see objects because they scatter the light that strikes them, reflecting some of it back to the eye. Cloaking uses materials, known as metamaterials, to deflect radar, light or other waves around an object, like water flowing around a smooth rock in a stream.

Metamaterials are mixtures of metal and circuit board materials such as ceramic, Teflon or fiber composite. They are designed to bend visible light in a way that ordinary materials don’t. Scientists are trying to use them to bend light around objects so they don’t create reflections or shadows.

It differs from stealth technology, which does not make an aircraft invisible but reduces the cross-section available to radar, making it hard to track.

The research was funded in part by the U.S. Army Research Office and the National Science Foundation’s Nano-Scale Science and Engineering Center.

E-INK: THE FUTURE IN PACKAGING IS NOW!!!!!!!!

A new technology that is being rolled out is going to make packaging for media, video games, and even magazines much more interesting for the consumer. A new form of product display called “E-Ink” is an inexpensive way to create a moving advertisement right on the proudct! Right now it only can do different shades of gray, but don’t expect it to be long before full blown color is out and we’ll see magazines and DVD cases that are animated and a lot more eye catching! Below is an example of this technology in a product demo. It will be in stores and newsstands soon, as it doesn’t cost much more than a printed page.

SHAZZAMMM! Les Bains des Docks a.k.a. “The Freshest Pool You Will Ever See”

Designed by the 2008 Prtizker-prize winning architect Jean Nouvel has just opened in the historical Port of Le Havre.

Inspired by the Roman thermal baths, the 5,000-square-meter complex offers an beautiful atmosphere of tranquility with a play of natural light.

Although the main “color” of the complex is white, each section’s distinct atmosphere and hue is created by flowing water curtains, color walls, and various textures and surface treatments. Each pool – lap-pool, children’s pool, whirlpools – is designed, shaped and lit to create a unique “private space” for its specific users.

An external lagoon makes the summer use of the complex even more appealing.

Very Cool- Plastic Bag Street Animals

“Just when you thought that street art was starting to get a bit stale, along comes something that reconnects you with the reasons you fell in love with street art in the first place.

Prolific bloggers Wooster Collective have posted about an artist in NYC who has been making animals out of discarded plastic bags. They tie them to the ventilation grates above the subway lines so that when the subway trains rush through underneath, the animal jumps up and springs to life. Awesome.”
